BULIMIA

Bulimia nervosa is known to be a psychological eating disorder. People often describe it as ‘gorge and purge’. At one moment, victims of bulimia go through series of binge-eating, then afterwards, followed by induced voluntary vomiting. These methods are believed to be ways of weight control. Bulimia is also associated with strict fasting, pill intake (that of laxatives and diuretics) and continued exercise. People with bulimia thinks that binge eating is the answer to their extreme hunger, emotional distress, and personal issues.

Like the anorectics, the common victims of bulimia are top achievers in school and community who thinks they lack something which they can only fill up upon achieving a perfectly thin body. It is hard to identify people who are suffering from bulimia, because they can look absolutely normal. Also, they are most likely to deny their state and do the binging and purging secretly. Often, they consume vast quantities of high-calorie foods such as sweets, cake, ice cream, and pastry which nutritionists refer to as ‘comfort foods’. People with bulimia may do their binging and purging ritual not only once, but several times daily.

Causes of Bulimia
Science knows no particular cause of bulimia, but it is said to rise from a person’s lack of self-contentment, thus continuously desiring for perfect body size and shape. Melancholy, depression, failure and stress may just be some of the few causes of bulimia leading to medical complications. Habitual purging exposes the tooth enamel to acidic gastric substance that may lead to serious erosion. Also, salivary glands will be vulnerable to swelling and soreness from repeated vomiting. Below are the other known medical complications from bulimia:

Dehydration
Stomach Ulcer
Inflammation of the stomach and esophagus that may cause rupture
Disturbance in the usual bowel release
Palpitation (irregular heart beats) that often results to heart attack
Reduction of libido
Possible root of suicidal behavior

The people behind bulimia
Often, people who suffers with bulimia a great deal are those who’s life or career are associated and focused on modeling and sports like dancing, gymnastics and running.
These people thinks they will do great and achieve more when they become thinner.

Life isn’t the sweetest candy. And sometimes, there comes a point in our life when we feel like a half-filled bottle going everywhere and doing everything to searc for answers and ways to feel complete. People who lack trust and self-confidence tend to blame no one but themselves for such loss, and thinks of methods to punish their bodies to get satisfaction. Often, they have a unreasonable thinking like – “Maybe I’d be more attractive to guys of my type if I was a little thinner”, or “maybe, I could hit homeruns twice as the usual if only I was thinner” and so on…

Fret not, because science says bulimia can be overcome. Primarily, bulimia victims needs a lot of help and support to be able to regain their self confidence and trust. At first, these people will be in denial state and great anger before one can finally convince them to undergo the process of bulimia treatment. Experts on treating eating disorders will be the best people to help them deal with it.
